사람들의 신임을 잃다.
A : Lance Armstrong lost most of his titles and millions of dollars in sponsorship money.
B : Yeah. There is a long list of athletes who have fallen from grace for using performance enhancing drugs.
A : Lance Armstrong이 그의 기록들과 수 십억의 후원금을 모두 날렸대.
B : 맞아. 경기력 향상 약물을 복용해 사람들의 신임을 잃은 많은 수의 선수들 명단이 있자나.
A : Do you remember the singing group Milli Vanilli?
B : Of course. Their fall from grace for lip syncing made them laughingstocks(웃음거리) of the music world.
A : 너 Milli Vanilli 기억나니?
B : 당근이지. 그들의 립싱크로 사람들의 신뢰를 잃고 음악계에서 웃음거리만 됐지.
If you are `in someone's good graces', it means that the person likes you and thinks favorably of you. If you `fall from grace', it means that you do something bad which makes people in authority stop liking you or admiring you, often resulting in a loss of reputation or rank.
This expression comes from the Bible. In the story of the creation of the world, God created the first man, Adam, from the dust of the earth. He then made the first woman, Eve, from one of Adam's ribs. They both lived in bliss in the Garden of Eden until Eve was tempted by a serpent(the Devil) to eat fruit (often described as an apple) off the Tree of Knowledge which God had told them never to eat. Then she gave Adam some to eat. As punishment, God banished them from the Garden of Eden, often called Man's fall from grace, which was the beginning of Man's suffering.
당신이 `in someone's good graces'라면, 그것은 그 사람이 당신을 좋아하거나 아주 좋게 생각하고 있는 것을 뜻합니다. 만약, 당신이 `fall from grace'한다면, 그것은 당신이 뭔가 나쁜 일을 했고 그것이 권력이 있는 사람들로부터 당신을 좋아하고 존경하는 것을 멈추게 하고, 주로 당신의 명성이나 기록들을 모두 잃어버리게 만든 결과를 뜻합니다.
이 표현은 성경에서 유래됩니다. 신이 세상을 창조 할 때, 신은 흙으로 세상에 첫 남자인 Adam을 만들었고, 그의 몸 속의 갈비뼈로 Eve를 만들었습니다. 그들은 에덴의 동산에서 아주 행복하게 아무 걱정 없이 살고 있었습니다. Eve가 사악한 뱀의 유혹으로 선악과 나무의 과일(사과로 알려진)을 따서 먹기 전까지 말이죠. 그리고 나서, 그녀는 Adam에게도 사과를 먹으라고 주었습니다. 그에 대한 처벌로, 신은 그들을 에덴의 동산에서 쫓아냈고, 그것은 Man's fall from grace라 불리우며, 그것으로 인해서 사람들의 고통이 시작되게 되었다고 합니다.
