■ The apple does not fall far from the tree
  한 아이가 행동이나 외모 둘 다 자신의 부모와 비슷하게 자라난다.

A : I don't understand why you don't like Johnny. He seems like a nice boy.
B : Maybe so, but his father is an ex-con and the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

A : 난 너가 왜 Jonny를 좋아하지 않는 것인지 이해가 안가. 그는 좋은 아이처럼 보이는데.
B : 그럴지도 모르지만, 그의 아빠는 죄수자 였어, 그 피는 못 속이지.

This expression means that a child grows up to be similar to his/her parents, both in behavior and in physical characteristics. It came to the English language from German in the 1500's. However, there is evidence that this expression actually has an Eastern origin, possibly Arabic or Turkish. It is frequently used to assert the continuity of family characteristics and can have a positive meaning such as the expression 'a chip off the old block'. However, is often used to have a negative connotation to describe someone with obvious failings, the saying asserts the problem was simply passed along from parent to child. The notion is similar to the expressions 'Like father, like son,' and 'Like mother, like daughter’.

이 표현은 한 아이가 행동이나 외모 둘 다 자신의 부모와 비슷하게 자라난다는 것을 의미합니다. 그것은 1500년대 독일을 통해서 영어표현으로 넘어 왔습니다. 그러나 원래 이 표현은 아랍어나 터키어인 동양에서 왔다는 증거가 있습니다. 흔히 한 가족의 특징에 연관성을 주장하기 위해서 쓰이는 데요, 예를 들어 'a chip off the old block(같은 나무에서 떨어진 나무 조각=역시 내 아들/딸)'이라는 좋은 뜻이 되기도 합니다. 하지만 한 사람에 대한 눈에 보이는 단점이나 문제점을 설명하기 위해서 자주 쓰여 부정적인 느낌도 갖고 있습니다. 그 표현은  'Like father, like son(부전자전)' 또는 'Like mother, like daughter(그 엄마의 그 딸)’과 비슷합니다.
