■ Indian summer
  북반구에서 생기는 현상으로 가을 중에 여름처럼 따뜻한 기간을 뜻합니다.

A : This is the hottest day ever recorded in October and the beaches are as packed.
B : Yeah, Indian summer sure does bring out the crowds.

A : 오늘은 10월 중 가장 더운 날이더라고, 해변에는 사람들이 바글바글해. 
B : 맞아. 분명 Indian summer가 사람들을 해변으로 불러낸 거지.

The term 'Indian summer' is defined as defines ‘a warm, calm spell of weather occurring in October and November, usually following a period of colder weather (꽃샘추위 후에) or frost in the late Autumn especially in North America where they are common.

While the definition of an Indian summer seems quite straightforward, the origins of the phrase are a little hazy. The term `Indian' does not refer to people from India. It refers to Native Americans who were wrongly labeled `Indians'. Anyway, references to this phrase go back to the 1700's and one theory credits the expression to the actions of the Native Americans during this time when they would wait for the warm weather in autumn to hunt and store food for winter.

'Indian summer'는 10월-11월에 따뜻하고 바람이 안부는 기간을 의미합니다. 북미권(캐나다와 북미) 지역에서 흔한 현상으로 보통은 꽃샘추위 이후 늦가을에 나타나는 날씨입니다. 'Indian summer'의 정의가 이해하기 쉬운 반면, 그 표현의 기원은 좀 애매해서 알려져 있지 않습니다. Indian이라는 단어는 실질적으로는 'India'에서 온 사람들이라는 표현이 아닙니다. 과거 북미지역에 살던 원주민들에게 'Indians'이라고 잘못 이름 지어 졌습니다. 어쨌든, 1700년대로 거슬러 올라가면 이 표현의 흔적을 찾을 수 있는데요, 북미 원주민들이 사는 곳에서 늦은 가을에도(추운데도) 따뜻한 날씨가 올 때는 (그들은 여름이 되찾아왔다고 생각해) 겨울을 위해 활발하게 사냥을 하고 음식을 저장하는 행동에서 나온 표현입니다.
