■ I should have nipped it in the bud when I first suspected him.
내가 처음에 그를 의심했을 때 문제가 심각해 지기 전에 싹을 잘라야 했어

A : I can't believe that Tim took off with all the money for charity.
B : I should have nipped it in the bud when I first suspected him.
A : It's not your fault. I fell for all the hearts and flowers, too.
B : Well, the police are looking for him, so he's not out of the woods yet.

A : 나는 Tim이 자선기금을 위해서 돈을 가지고 도망갔다는 것을 믿을 수가 없어.
B : 내가 처음에 그를 의심했을 때 문제가 심각해 지기 전에 싹을 잘라야 했어.
A : 그것은 네 잘못이 아니야. 그의 말이 심금을 울려서 나도 그랬잖아.
B : 어쨌든. 경찰이 그를 찾고 있으니깐, 그는 아직 위기(곤경)를 벗어난 것은 아니야.

▶ nip it in the bud 말 그대로 꽃봉오리나 싹을 잘라버려서 더 이상 꽃이 피지 못하게 막는 것으로 보통 우리는 어떤 일이 더 나빠지기 전에 예방차원에서 미리 싹을 잘라서 미연에 방지 해야 한다는 것을 뜻합니다.
Literally, this means to remove a bud from a plant to prevent it from flowering or bearing fruit. As an idiom, it means to put a stop to something while it is still in its early development.

▶out of the woods 숲 속에서 벗어난 상태. 과거 개척자들이 먼 길을 떠났을 때 그들의 목적지를 바로 가기는 힘들어 간혹 추운 겨울에 숲 같은 곳에 갇히기도 했습니다. 숲은 위기나 어려운 상황을 의미하는 것으로 어떤 안 좋은 상황에서 벗어난 것을 의미합니다.
Out of difficulties, danger or trouble. Early pioneers travelled long distances each day so they could reach their destination as soon as possible. To be caught in the wilderness in the winter was almost certain death, so they often pushed on until they found a clearing out of the woods.
